Anyone on here turbo a 2001 carburated R1 enigne on here? I have a 2001 Raptor quad with a 2001 R1 engine it's pretty fun but now I'm building another one. I already found a cheap engine 2001 r1 enigne also and I have a t25 nissan 240 turbo I would to get a t28 but that's down the road a little. I also got a small side mount intercooler from a 240 that I plan on using also. The new quad I plan on being a drag only quad stretched and slammed and I'm going to shoot for the low 200hp range to start with.

What needs to be done to the carbs to make them ready for boost? I know you need to preasurize them by putting boost to the top and bottom of the carbs.

When tunning the carbs how much of a change is it on the jets or any?

This will be a from scratch kit and I need to start a list

Have this stuff
T25 turbo w/internal waste gate
Intercooler

Need to get stillflange to make turbo header
blow off valve
rising rate fuel preasure regulator (recomendations standard FMU?)
high preasure/high volume pump (still need recomdations on what one)
custom intake with I think 5 vacuum/boost ports 2 for top and bottom of carbs 1-2 and 2 for carbs 3-4 and one for the rising rate preasure regulator (not sure what else needs to see vacuum/boost) do I need any missing links
piping
silicone tubing for pipes
clamps for pipes
double head gasket
Do I need an oil pump for the turbo?

That's all I know for now any help would be greatly appreciated!

have you thought of converting to efi?
if you went to efi you could tune it so much better Wink

i honestly havent messed with carbed turboes so i cant offer alot of expertise at this time

How hard would it be to convert over to efi on a 2001 R1? I've thought about it but seems like you need alot of stuff to make that work. This is going to be a drag only quad so pretty much either on or off on the throttle I won't need to tune to much in the ridability since it's not like I'm going to try and maintain speed. If I'm maintaining speed then I'm sure I'll be looseing those races.

your in luck
megasquirt could be the setup for you along side a newer r1 throttle bodies or another set that would fit the spacing Wink

it is affordable and works great IMHO

its a matter of a little research

Where are you located?

I like the EFI idea best- MegaSQUIRT  thumbs  up
Dependability + tune ability = perfection  laughing7

here's a 99 R1, I know of another 99 carb done some time ago, but the link is dead-

Turbo and carbs can be done and work alright but you will be messing with them constantly EFI would be the way to go get some throttle bodies off a newer R1 (if the spacing is the same) And depending on the stock injector size you have two choices bigger injectors or the stock injectors with a second set of injectors mounted in the plenum and you could run staged injection.

I would run fuel only at first to get it running and tuned then if you wanted you could go to fuel and ignition both.

The Megasquirt would do the job just fine if you wanted to use it as many other boxes would too but the MS would probably be more universal for your purpose and you could build off of it for future stuff.

The trick to turbo blowthru is to get all the pipes and hoses exactly as has worked for someone else, Ake's 99 on turbo-bike is a McXpress kit and they put lots of time into developing a system that worked, but checkout the probs some guys get when they do it a little different on http://www.r1-forum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=45323&page=37

I showed the turbo-bike setup to a guy doing blowthru on a early cbr600, he copied it  , only difference was the carb bowl vents were part of the inlet rams  when finished he brought it to me to set the mixtures, i checked and sent him home, i couldn't improve on what he had, 12:1 flat on boost and `13.2 off very little spiking or variation.

Efi is an easy conversion, my first blow thru wasn't as sucessfull in 2001 and i put later throttlebodies on my gsxr and a microtech fuel only ecu, same could be done with a microsquirt or megasquirt, cost a little for the parts but very easy to tune , still running well today.

Thanks for you guys input I've been looking at the megasquirt and found some fuel injection fot it on ebay for $150 so I think I'm going to try that out. I'm sure I'll have some questions once I get a little further into it but I need to get the engine in the frame first.
